PATRICK McGRATH RELEASES EP WHEN BLACK IS BLUE
Bronx-born, suburban transplant Patrick McGrath releases the EP, When Black Is Blue, produced by Eric “Roscoe” Ambel (The Bottle Rockets, Yayhoos, Freedy Johnston). With one foot in NY’s anti-folk/singer-songwriter scene and the other in the blue-collar world of industrial warehouses, McGrath’s songs join the two worlds to reveal the quirky darker side of life.
With songs that feature outcasts, troubled relationships, self destruction and lyrics that veer toward the black comedy, “I need a drink but I know I can’t have one … because if I have one, I’ll have twenty,” McGrath’s songs tell fictional stories inspired by real life people, places and events. The opening track, “When Black Is Blue,” tells the story of adolescent love that ends with the artistic introvert black-eyed and heartbroken. With lyrics like, “Flat on her back, Cindy's sleeping with the quarterback,” this isn’t your typical tale of love lost.
When Black Is Blue came about almost by accident. The EP was recorded spontaneously in mid 2010 when Randy Schrager had a rare free Saturday in between tours for Jesse Malin and Scissor Sisters and producer Eric Ambel was available that same day. With only two rehearsals, Patrick chose five songs out of an arsenal of material and went intoCowboy Technical Services in Brooklyn, NY with his ad hoc band, to cut the tracks. The musicians include Ambel (Steve Earle, Joan Jett) on lead guitars, Randy Schrager (Scissor Sisters) on drums, Jared Engel (Abigail Washburn) on upright & electric bass, Mary Lee Kortes (Mary Lee’s Corvette) on harmony vocals, and Rob Arthur (Leann Rimes, Peter Frampton) on Hammond organ.
His first release since 2006’s Wet Nurse To A Dirty Bag established him as an artist to watch, the new offering showcases the more melodic side of McGrath, while Wet Nurse is more raw and political.
